Have you ever gone on a fantastical journey - and wanted to share what you discovered?
I grew up on an idyllic ranch in Northern California, where horses and Mother Nature defined my childhood days.
The other thing that defined my days? Very real visions about fierce and wonderful other worlds, where I could fly, where fantastical airborne machines and beings of light floated over beautiful landscapes.
When I told my parents about these worlds, they looked nervous and said “Don’t talk about this, ever. If you do, we’re going to have to take you to see someone.”
I got labeled as “touched”.
Troubled.
I felt so confused. Humiliated.
It was devastating and all I wanted to do was run far, far away.
Nature was my one comfort. Beautiful, welcoming, magical.
I always felt at home there.
I learned about myself there.
As I grew up, I learned to photograph there 📷. And I began creating images of my beloved high mountains and sweeping valleys, always featuring phenomenal light, mysterious shadows, expressive clouds and a sense of soaring.
Time passed. I became a professional travel and landscape photographer, my images known for conveying a “touch of magic”.
For capturing what others had missed.
I was fortunate enough to travel the world - and found myself deeply appreciating the art in all the beautiful hotels in Europe where I had the privilege to stay.
I began to imagine myself painting my own dreamy, abstract landscapes.
To make marks, not just take photographs.
Then one day, the world I was told NOT to see when I was a little girl began to re-emerge in my mind. It was a compulsion - I couldn’t help myself.
You see, I never forgot my wondrous faraway places and fascinating characters.
They had been waiting patiently, just beyond seeing.
Only this time, no one was telling me not to see them.
It was like being called back home.
I developed a new painting process. It began with a photograph.
Then I spread, schmeared, melted it - adding depth and texture.
Each one became the foundation for my magical places.
Once I had the landscape photographs the way I liked them, I drew my magical mystical world right on top of them.
Whimsical steampunk flying machines?YES!
Quirky characters, beings of light, unique birds, misty atmospheres, fierce and wondrous tales from other dimensions?
Bring it!!
They poured out of me like a dam had broken loose - and I set them all to float above beautiful, dreamy landscapes.
Sometimes whimsical, other times yearning: each had a story, a life of their own. I giggled out loud more than once as these new worlds came to life beneath my brushes!
Before I knew it, I had made an entirely new art collection of my whimsical worlds.
I flashed back to darker times in my life when I felt like there was no hope or escape. And it dawned on me just how much my life has transformed from feeling odd or alone to this place of joy, security, protection, love and light. ✨
My Whimsical Worlds Collection has taken me full circle back to the little girl who saw these amazing worlds - whom no one believed.
Creating bold new art from it - and sharing it? It's been an act of healing. It is my gift to her.
This collection is a celebration of moving from dark-to-light, of finding the freedom to not just survive - but to thrive, no matter the circumstances. Across all realities.

Whimsical Worlds Collection
The mixed-media pieces in this art collection each started out as a photograph of the American West.
Each then underwent a transformative process of being smudged, smeared, painted over, drawn upon and layered with texture + light; resulting in a truly unique treatment.
Inspirations draw from Karen’s visions of other worlds woven into scenes from her own beautiful natural one.
